A while ago, we had the chance to talk with METEOROID about their first album GEMINI which came out on August 6th 2014.
In this interview, the band discusses their album, thoughts about each other, experiences as a band and plans for the future.
VKH: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Would you please introduce yourselves?
GENKI : I’m the vocalist GENKI.
Yutori : I’m the guitarist. I love sushi!
Machi : I play the guitar. I hate sushi.
ral : ROCK AND LOW/BASS
Tomoya : I play the drums! I’m Tomoya!
VKH: If you could describe your fellow band members in one word each, how would you describe them?
GENKI : Spirit
Yutori : GENKI: human, Machi: human, ral: Titan, Tomoya: human
Machi : GENKI: voice, Yutori: crazy, ral: Rock, Tomoya: Black-haired
ral : GENKI: CORE, Yutori: CRAZY, Machi: COOL, Tomoya: NONSTOP
Tomoya : GENKI: Nuclear, Yutori: Missile, Machi: Radar, ral: Launch-pad
VKH: In two months, your first album GEMINI will be released! What is the main concept behind it? Also what does the word "Gemini" mean to METEOROID?
VKH: Why are you only releasing a new version of "LITTLE BOY?" How is it different from your live-limited release version from before?
GENKI : Originally, "LITTLE BOY" was a love ballad from the start. We didn't really choose it like at first like, "When should we release it," but we wanted to release it sooner or later so when we were deciding the final song of the album, we could only think of "LITTLE BOY," and released it with this timing!
VKH: In accordance with the release of GEMINI, METEOROID will have a nationwide tour. What can fans expect from this tour?
ral : From this point, I think it will be the hottest summer.
Tomoya : Since March of this year we have gone to various regions and played in various live houses. As a result, I believe that the time that we’ve spent together has strengthened us as METEOROID. We will come and spread this fever that we have nationwide.
VKH: For people who have never heard METEOROID's music, what song or release would you suggest they listen to?
GENKI : Any song! It’s all METEOROID.
Yutori : Ibarahime!
Machi : "GEMINI."
ral : "DIVER."
Tomoya : You should definitely try listening to “DIVER” first ♪
VKH: We know you have a busy schedule! What do you do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies?
GENKI : If I have time, I write more songs. My hobby is “eating delicious food” maybe?
Yutori : I would like to draw pictures.
Machi : I would like to go travelling. My hobby is fishing.
ral : I would like to walk aimlessly around town. My hobby is shopping.
Tomoya : If I had free time, I would drink and listen to my favourite music. My hobbies and driving and drinking!
VKH: Have you always wanted to become musicians? What was your childhood dream?
GENKI : To be a baker.
Yutori : Mutant turtles.
Machi : In my second year of middle school, I decided that I wanted to be a musician.
ral : In my childhood, I wanted to be a policeman or an athlete. After that, I became fascinated by music and began to love it.
Tomoya : In my fifth year of elementary school, I wanted to be a firefighter. However after that I started to think that I wanted to be a musician.
VKH: If your bandmates were girls, who would you date and why?
GENKI : I’m the most serious so probably myself? (laughs)
Yutori : Me!
Machi : I don’t wanna date (laughs).
ral : Probably Yutori-chan. It would be interesting right? (laughs)
Tomoya : Umm...myself is fine (laughs)
VKH: What do you want people to think when they hear the name "METEOROID"?
GENKI : Green Visual Kei!!
Yutori : Green!!
Machi : Aggressive band.
ral : Aggressive.
Tomoya : Dominant both inside and out!!
VKH: What is your best memory or experience with the band?
GENKI : The best memories are on tour in the tour bus and in the service areas!
Yutori : Getting fat during the tour.
Machi : I don’t really have a favourite memory. They’re all memories.
ral : Every day is a memory.
Tomoya : Probably the times when everyone was completely exhausted but we all got an unexpected fighting spirit!

VKH: In addition to the album, do you have any other plans?
Machi : We will continue the tour in July and August. Soon we will reach a landmark as METEOROID with the O-WEST ONEMAN LIVE on September 17th. Not just with our fans in Japan, but we definitely think our overseas fans will want to be there as well.
Yutori : Definitely come to our O-WEST ONEMAN LIVE on September 17th!

GENKI : The concept is “human beings” and “life”. GEMINI describes twins, having a double nature (two faces) and other things with that kind of meaning. In this song, we’re expressing the dual nature in every person.
VKH: Watching the Spot for your PV for "GEMINI," one can easily see the idea of "two" or "dual nature" from the beginning, but why is there a Joker? Is there a specific story arc or concept to the PV?
GENKI : It's not a joker, it's a clown. The dual nature is revealed between me, while wearing white clothes, and the clown with stillness and motion.
VKH: Watching the Spot for your PV for "GEMINI," one can easily see the idea of "two" or "dual nature" from the beginning, but why is there a Joker? Is there a specific story arc or concept to the PV?

VKH: Are you referencing the story of Adam and Eve with the song "Eden no Sono" and the image of the apple (forbidden fruit) on the album cover of Type B. If so, please tell us why you chose to make this reference.
GENKI : We're coming to a sharp place. (laughing)

I was probably aware of the story of Adam and Eve. I think that in love and life there is always a sweet snare (the forbidden fruit) adjoined. The song and the album GEMINI are both works born from this type of conflict so we finished off the jacket with this type of feeling.
