Interview with ADAMS at AVO Festival

ADAMS is a neo-sexual rock duo that has been formed back in 2011. For the first time, ADAMS are having a European tour, On July 14th they played together with Gothika and Vaniru in Utrecht, Tivoli de Helling, together they celebrated the dutch forum AVO for existing for 10 year. We were able to catch some time with ADAMS after their performance to answer some questions.

First of all, would you please introduce yourselves!

Shota:
We are neo-sexual rock duo ADAMS, Neo-sexual means not gay, not bisexual, not straight. It means others sexes.

How did you get to know each other?

Shota: Few years ago, we were already in  a band together but soon it disbanded.

Who actually wanted to form the band?

Shota: Two years after the previous band had disbanded, we met up for some drinks and Adam told me he is now a vocalist and he is searching for someone to help him write songs and producing them. That time I just started my own label and started producing songs. So Adam asked me to help him out with producing songs. So I say okay, let’s do it. First it was Adam solo work and I was thinking how I can make him known worldwide. So then I thought I am a guitarist so I joined Adam, but we thought that it was not enough, so we kept thinking and thinking and we came on the idea neo-sexual rock duo.

Who takes responsibility for what? (e.g., who writes the music, lyrics, works on production, etc.)

Adam: I do all the vocals

Shota: Guitar, production, management, everything, too much work, so busy. *laughs*

You have said that your band's concept is "Neo-sexual" or "homosexuality" - Could you explain the concept to everyone and why you have chosen it?

Shota: When I was a producer I keep thinking what would suit us. Visually we are not Visual Kei, we both like pop music, dance music, we can even be considered a pop duo, but we choose Visual Kei because visual kei in part of jrock and in the Japanese industry it’s only a small part, but very hot. Just like how normally it would be girl and boy falling in love, but in comics you will also have yaoi story’s, japan comics is a huge market but we want to find something small and hot, the smaller the better and the hotter the better.

How would you say homosexuality is viewed in Japan?

Shota: Homosexuality is a huge no to the Japanese people. Same with Visual Kei it isn’t viewed very well by Japanese people. Normally in the beginning they will think that you have no talents at all, but the more you promote, the more they want and start liking you more and more.

What do you believe people think when they hear the name "ADAMS"? What do you want them to think?

Shota: Usually Adams Family, in both good and bad ways. Because We are Humans from the future, we love each other and we want to make more eves. Adam & Eve are from the past, we are from the future. Our concept as well

Where do you take inspiration from for your lyrics and music?

Shota: (after a small discussion with Adam) Secret *Laughs*

When you debuted back in 2011, what was or still is your main goal? What do you want to achieve with your music?

Shota: Nothing from our goal and planning has changed.

You have already played some concerts during your tour in Europe. What have been the best experiences for you so far? Have you been surprised about the positive reactions of your European fans during lives?

Adam: Very hot.

Shota: Very hot, I like it.

What would you say about one another since having worked together for two years now?

Shota: Adam is a very good person

Adam: I would say the same thing
*both laughs*

If you hadn't become musicians, what would you probably be instead?

Adam: Already dead. *both laughs*

Shota: Oh wait, we aren't human yet, because we are not born yet. *laughs* we will be born in 2021.

In a previous interview, you said that you create an air of mystery... Adam especially, since there really is not much about him. Could you tell us something of your band history that readers may find interesting?

Adam: Mysterious or not mysterious, we think being mysterious will be more interesting.

Shota: Without it is boring. Since we have done our planning for the coming 10yrs.

Our author, James, reviewed your album "NEO SEXUAL", ultimately praising both your visual and musical style saying "As time goes by, ADAMS will undoubtedly gain fame and followers, increasing their relevance." In your two years of activity, have you noticed the large amount of fans you have gained?

Shota: Ah, I have read it.

Adam: Thank you, for the praises.

Shota: Yes, and as said before, we will have activities until 2021, so we hope that the fan base will keep growing.

James also mentions that ADAM has a voice better suited for upbeat music, but his vocal range could pull-off heavier genres as well. Do you think you may experiment with a heavier type of music?

Shota: Actually our new single Bittersweet, is already considered very heavy for us. But we might try it again but that is a secret *everyone laughs*

Any future plans?

Shota: Next will be no album but single. Dizzy Love was a single, neo-sexual was an album, Bittersweet is a single and the next one will not be an album but single.

Please send a message to your fans!

Adam: Peace, Rate, Love

Shota: Love, Love, Love

Special thanks to Fran of AVO Forums and Astan for making this interview possible! Please look forward to more reports from AVO Festival!
