MIYAVI Confirms Rumors of Playing a Role in Maleficent 2!

A few hours ago, MIYAVI put on a stunning performance for Anime Weekend Atlanta. One of the surprises of the concert was that the convention staff gave the entire audience permission to film parts of the show with their smartphones (a rather unconventional allowance for a Japanese artist). There are sure to be many videos floating around social media, so make sure you keep an eye out for them!

If you were at the concert and had been filming at the right time, you may have recorded a big piece of information that the samurai guitarist dropped during one of his MC speeches. You can hear it for yourself in the video below, but MIYAVI casually confirmed that he was cast to play a role in Maleficent 2!

This is significant because although there were rumors and hints dropped by MIYAVI and others, we had yet to hear official confirmation. And while we’d like to believe the casting credit given to MIYAVI on the IMDB webpage for the movie, the fact that the website’s information comes largely from user contributions has caused even Wikipedia to deem that website as “inappropriate” for citing as a source for films still in production (click here for Wikipedia’s statements on this). At any rate, we’ve now heard it straight from MIYAVI that he is playing a role in the film. Check out the video below and see for yourself!

In the video, you can hear MIYAVI describe how he spent the summer "in London for 2 months—no music, it's crazy." He then goes on to mention his "little part of Maleficent 2." We're sure fans didn't expect the news to be confirmed in this way, but then again, that's why it's important to attend any J-rock concert you can, because all the magic happens there!

Maleficent 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2020. It stars Angelina Jolie, who cast MIYAVI to play the role of Mutsuhiro "The Bird" Watanabe in her 2015 movie Unbroken. The film will continue to expand on Disney's retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty villain that began in its predecessor film Maleficent. So MIYAVI fans: make sure to keep this movie on your radar!
