REVIEW: Acid Black Cherry - "INCUBUS"

Acid Black Cherry recently released the single INCUBUS to promote his upcoming album L. This powerful-yet-sad song  is a fantastic listen that shows off the artist's ability to mix energetic and somber themes to create an emotionally engrossing experience. And with strong singles like Kimi ga Inai Anohi kara...Kuro Neko ~Adult Black Cat~, and Greed Greed Greed preceding it, INCUBUS is just one more reason to get excited for Acid Black Cherry's upcoming album.

Tracklist:
1. INCUBUS
2. CLOUDY HEART (“LAST GIGS” ver.)[Recreation Track]

"INCUBUS" is a well-crafted and well-produced track. It opens with strong power chords in a minor key, and layers additional guitar notes upon it. Acid Black Cherry sings in English during the verses, and even though his Japanese accent is still very thick, his English has improved, and most of it can be understood by a casual J-rock listener. The song's chorus is moving and somber, featuring lingering guitar melodies and haunting violin notes in the background. The chorus is followed by well-harmonized crooning that will send a shiver down the listener's spine. The strongest point of the song is the bridge. Guitars build in intensity as Acid Black Cherry's singing quickens. After a brief and moving lull, the intensity doubles as the bridge reaches a fantastic climax, before returning to the excellent chorus and repeating the formula to close out the song. This song is yet another feather in Acid Black Cherry's musical cap.

The B-side of the INCUBUS single is the latest of Acid Black Cherry's Recreation tracks, which are covers of popular songs from Japanese pop and rock culture."CLOUDY HEART", originally performed by BOØWY, is a fun ballad sporting a quick tempo, well-placed lingering guitar notes, and well-timed drumming. Acid Black Cherry embellishes the song with well-hit notes and excellent harmonization. Although "INCUBUS" is the clear reason to get the single, the "CLOUDY HEART" cover is still a fun song to listen to.

It's clear that Acid Black Cherry is continuing to revamp his already-solid musical style in anticipation of his new album. I hope that L continues the intricate evolution of Acid Black Cherry's style, as INCUBUS and its recent predecessors have so successfully done.
