Before DEATHGAZE begin their DEATH WORLD tour through Europe and South America, the band answer some of our questions regarding their upcoming tour, the scene as they see it, and a bit about their plans after their indefinite hiatus. See what DEATHGAZE say below!
VKH: What are some of your best memories from your last European tour?
Ai: Everything.
Takaki: The landscape of Poland and the nature.
Kosuke: I think the live in Paris. The fans in Paris were the coolest!
Naoki: The fact that everyone gave us such a warm welcome!
VKH: Do you have anything special planned for this tour?
Takaki: I'm currently thinking about (what to do for)it.
Kosuke: It's a secret.
VKH: What are you hoping to see in South America?
Takaki: I'd love to go sightseeing! But I'm not sure what I'd like to see yet.
Kosuke: More than what places I'd like to go to, it's what I'd like to eat! I wanna try something tasty there.
Naoki: If there's time, I definitely want to go sightseeing!
Ai: Got any recommendations?
VKH: What is the theme behind your album ENIGMA?
Ai: You could have ten people listen to the same thing and each one form their own unique interpretation. We’d like for people to try listening to the album with this in mind—that rather than a single answer, there are different ways of approaching something. The album concept is ENIGMA, as in a mystery or riddle.
VKH: What are some things you have noticed about the visual kei scene after 11 years of activity as DEATHGAZE?
Takaki: It’s music where how it looks, like costumes and makeup, for example, is part of the performance, I suppose.
Kosuke: I think at this stage it’s Japanese culture.
Naoki: I think that what’s called “visual kei” is really a world of different types of music.
VKH: What would you say were major contributions to the growth of DEATHGAZE?
Takaki: The sense of purpose or determination of our vocalist, Ai, and our drummer, Naoki.
Ai: Perseverance.
Kosuke: It’s because there have been people there supporting us, and because each member has been giving it all they’ve got.
Naoki: The trust we have among the members, and the support from our fans.
VKH: What are your favorite memories from all of your years of activity?
Ai: There’s too many.
Kosuke: The fact that we got to do an overseas tour is really amazing.
Takaki: After lives when we would all eat and laugh together, after we would go to a public bath, laugh and behave like idiots.
Naoki: The times when we would sell out large venues, and while we were performing we could see the beautiful scenery. Even now, if I close my eyes I can still see it.
VKH: Will the band members continue to work in music individually during the hiatus?
Takaki: Hmm, don’t know yet...
Kosuke: A band is something you can’t do alone, and it’s become that kind of situation.
Naoki: I don’t have any plans yet, but I really want to continue.
Ai: It’s a secret.
VKH: Would you please send a message to the fans?
Naoki: We’re so grateful for the chance to do this overseas tour. Please forward to the live!
Kosuke: Because of everyone’s support we were able to have 11 years of history. We truly thank you. We’ll do our best until our hiatus!
Takaki: Thanks everyone! We’ll be waiting at the live.
Ai: Please take care of us!
Special thanks to DEATHAGAZE for taking the time to answer our questions and to B7Klan for making this interview possible!
