The Mootekkis has been making a name for themselves in the
underground scene in Tokyo with their rough-around-the-edges, old-school rock
style. Heckling the Dawn is their first full-length release, and shows the
bands range of stylistic influences, while establishing a fun and unique
atmosphere throughout.

The Mootekkis is made up of an interesting group: an
American, an Australian, and three people from Japan. The band’s bio is so unique that it reads like
the summary of a movie, however, the different paths of life
that these band members come from adds to the layers of the band – and the
diversity of stylistic influences is a major part of why this record sounds so
great.
The album instantly invokes imagery synonymous with the
underground scene that the band has matured in: drinking, partying, and things
going wrong. The old-school rock sound mixed with the band’s lyrics evokes the
scene The Mootekkis comes out of, which builds a unified atmosphere throughout
the album. This adds to replayability, as many tracks are great on their own,
but the album is also great to simply let run through without skipping around.
Influences ranging from surf guitar to blues can be found
throughout the album, and speak to a noteworthy range of diversity that the
band has. Uniting the diverse sounds on different tracks is a unified
garage-rock sound with old-school rock composition, something not always found
in the Tokyo music scene, or anywhere, these days.
Heckling the Dawn is a very solid debut LP from The
Mootekkis, and leaves me hoping that their unique sound only reaches more
people. This record comes recommended for those who enjoy classic rock,
garage-rock, or perhaps are open to a different sound than what is on the
airwaves.
