SURGE ~ outofdesperation - Interview

Hello everyone! previously we had announced a fairly new band SURGE ~ outofdesperation. Well we were very fortunate to be able to do an interview! Check out what they had to say.

1. So let's start by introducing the band and its members.
- Yo! I’m Kazuki Yagami, vocalist. I’m glad to be here!
- Hello! I'm Ale Verukan, guitarist of SURGE~outofdesperation!
- Hi! I'm Smash the guitarist. nice to meet you (^_-)-

- Hello! I’m Tai Kioshi, drummer from SURGE~outofdesperation.
- Hi, I'm Dayrell bassist ! o/

2. What is the meaning behind your band name?
Kazuki: The name comes from a work of Daisuke Ochida. He is my greatest inspiration to be a singer. A sudden increase of desperation. The beginning of the name written in upper case refers to that feeling that suddenly takes your heart. Then the "~" and the rest written together without spaces refers to the acceptance and serenity, facing powerlessness over the inevitable or calm and stability to deal with the situation. Everything depends on the view of the reader.

3. What do you want people to think when they hear your band name?
Kazuki: I want them to be swayed by the music to the way that their minds indicates. I always try to allow two main ways of interpreting the lyrics. Even for those who do not understand the lyrics we take special care of the tune to touch on the feelings of the listeners. Perhaps, the most important than what I want them to think is what I want them to feel. I want them to feel as if the music fills their souls.

4. How did you all meet?
Kazuki: I met Tai Kioshi and Smash (who are childhood friends) by referral from a friend who knew them at an anime con. I had see Dayrell in some anime cons before, but we never chatted. Then I met Dayrell and Ale Verukan at university, both met there earlier.

5. How old were you when you started playing your instruments/singing? and what made you gravitate toward that particular instrument?
Kazuki: I never sang before being in SURGE ~, so I started at age 22. Did not even do any kind of study. I sing with purely the way I feel. If you look this way, I sing since I started to have feelings. (Laughs).
Ale Verukan:  I play the guitar for 5 years, since I got my first electric guitar when I was 16. I actually wanted to start learning how to play a guitar because of Slash from Guns n' Roses, which still a big idol for me nowadays

Smash: Have 4 years since I started to play guitar. After watching DVD's of The Gazette live
concert Aoi and Uruha were my big inspiration. After that I was sure that I want to play guitar.

Tai: Have 4 years since I started to play drums. I always had curiosity about playing drums. My grandfather was the one who encouraged me and gave me as a gift this wonderful musical instrument. When I got to know about visual kei (the GazettE was the first band I knew) I had more motivation to continue learning.

Dayrell: It is about 6 years I play bass, I got to play guitar and electric guitar but always liked over deep bass sound!

6. How did you get into Visual Kei?
Kazuki: In 2006 I met the style and it completed my life. The sound, the look, the feeling in the music. This struck me that never had any musical style done. The sound of the Japanese language was also a crucial factor, since I've enjoyed since childhood anime and tokusatsus openings and ending themes.

Ale Verukan: I started at Visual Kei because of SURGE~, because I knew the band and its member before getting into it.

Smash: In 2006 I discovered visual kei on tv program about Japanese culture, and since
then VKei became part of my life.

Tai Kioshi: I got to know my first visual kei band through a friend, who also is in the band. Our guitarist Smash Nakamura.

Dayrell:  I always looked for a style of music that I like it more, but I always lacked something, after a while I met Nightmare, I researched about the style and realized that I liked a lot!

7. What made you decide to start a VK band?
Kazuki: I was singing a song from the GazettE in a year-end party in 2009, and the former bassist Fallen commented about my voice and we talked about starting a band. I pointed out that if it was to have a band and sing J-Rock we would have to adopt the look, no doubt.

8. Who is your favourite VK band?
Kazuki: I really enjoy Signal, Merry, -OZ- , the GazettE, Dali , Born, Awoi, exist+trace... But my favourites are Dir en grey and kagerou.

Ale Verukan: Dir en grey and Versailles

Smash:  D, DELUHI, Dir en grey.

Tai Kioshi: The GazettE , Dir en grey, Luna sea

Dayrell: Dir en Grey and Kiryu

9. Do they influence your playing style? if so, How does it influence your style?
Kazuki: Sure. I try to put emotion in my voice when I am singing like Kyo and Daisuke Ochida, and especially to always honor the memory of Daisuke Ochida.

Ale Verukan: I'm always thinking about Kyo's great performances at the stage, and how he really seems to feel in his soul the words he is singing. About Versailles, I just love Teru and Hizaki in everything! Their spectacular playing technique and every look and move that they do while playing their songs. That just makes everyone believe that something magical is happening at that moment.

Smash:  My influences come of many musicians like...I love to see Leda and Ruiza performances, they've awesome guitar techniques. Kaya and asagi have so beautiful movements and all of they create a magic atmosphere on the stage I remember all this and then...I just go with the flow.

Tai: Sensational bands. I familiarized myself a lot with them melodies, performances, techniques... The lightness while firmly beats along with the expression.

Dayrell: Basically at all, and not only how to play but also how to compose!
I really like the performances of both bands! But my greatest inspirations are Toshiya and Takemasa!

10. Since you aren't Japanese, What are the difficulties that you face by adopting a Japanese style?
Kazuki: Prejudice with the look because it is unusual and difficult to enter the more popular music market in Brazil. Lack of investment coming from potential sponsors and entrepreneurs of our country and language difficulties also because none of us speak Japanese fluently.

11. Do you sing in just Japanese or do you also compose songs in your native language?
Kazuki: Only Japanese and some in English. Maybe in the future we will compose one music in Portuguese ...

12. What kind of challenges do you have composing a song in Japanese?
Kazuki: We do not speak Japanese! (Laughs) A friend, Renato Tsuyoshi, makes the translation and I adapt to the melody composed mostly by Ale Verukan and Smash and before by Hideto. Then I talk to Tsuyoshi-san about changes, possible synonyms for the words fit better in tune. The process of memorizing and pronounce is easier because I listen to J-Rock since long time ago.

13. How often do you practice?
Kazuki: As a group, one to two times per week. Individually, every day of the week.

14. How do you get inspiration for your music?
Kazuki: In which we live, feel and see on a daily basis. Be on a global scale, local, or even details of landscapes and small movements of the human body that reveal the innermost feelings.

15. How long does it take you to create a song?
Kazuki: This varies widely. When dealing with melody, sometimes Ale Verukan creates almost the whole song in one or two days, as well as Hideto did, and there we only adjust details later. Sometimes take months. The Smash always takes a little more time. Sometimes I write lyrics in about 10 minutes, as it was with Baioretto or in an hour, as it was with Blessed Trap. Sometimes in a few days, as it was with Shinda Tenshi ~Kamiko’s Story~.

16. Do you compose independently then bring it all together? or do you compose as a group all at the same time?
Independently in most cases.

17.  How do you achieve your VK look while not being in Japan? It must not be easy to buy clothes and find what you want.
Kazuki: We decided how we wanted and then we studied some references. After all, we designed and researched fabrics in stores in our city. With what we could find, we redid the project to make it possible. Then we took the material to a dressmaker and we coordinated the confection. The result was very good.

18. What was your experience like at your first concert?
Kazuki: Awesome. It was for about 180 people at a charity event. Had many friends and family in the audience. I remember I cried at the end after singing R-Shitei in tribute of Daisuke Ochida.

Ale Verukan: In the first show, I kept feeling very nervous before entering the stage and thinking about every problem that could happen. But after the show had already began, all worries went away and I had a great experience.

Smash:  before we start the concert I was really nervous and anxious...When I stepped on the stage all my worries went off and when I saw everybody enjoying the concert I became very happy. By the way... I wasn't completely comfortable because I played without shoes. Were part of my visual but it isn't good to do a concert without shoes.

Tai: The first show was really good. I must say that I was very nervous and anxious wondering what could happen, what people would think .. But everything worked, everybody enjoyed.

Dayrell: I was very nervous at the first show! I got to stand with my legs trembling (laughing). But when finished and saw that people had liked it, although it was not as good (smile). I realized it was a great feeling and I wanted to continue to go through that!

19. How have your performances progressed? for example are they easier, more routine, no change, etc.
Ale Verukan: I think my performance has progressed a lot since my first experiences on the stage, and I'm always studying and searching any possible ways to get it better and better to show the best of my technique and the best of my feelings for the music in every concert!

Kazuki: I make the words from Ale my words.

Smash: Since the beginning of band my technic had improved a lot. I like to practice guitar everyday, but I always want go further, learn new things and get more experience on live concerts.

Tai Kioshi: Seeking to know more melodies, grooves ... Through concerts held. Everything contributes to an increasingly improve on an ongoing basis, becoming easier day after day.

Dayrell: As I said at the beginning it was hard! XD But after a while my technique has evolved and lost "stage fright" It has become increasingly easy, but I always try to improve. Inspiring me in my studies and idols!

20. Will you be doing any PV's in the near future and what song(s) do you want to do a PV for?
Kazuki: We're working hard at it. There is always some problem that prevents or delays us. Guess we'll ask you to write another band instead of us (Laughs). The PV Baioretto was being recorded, but then Hideto left and we had to cancel. We are currently studying record a PV for Baioretto or MaD Sushi Party.

21. You were just recently on Viju Love Cafe how did it make you feel being on a show that have very successful and well known VK artists on?
Kazuki: No words to describe. Also in the same issue that Alice Nine, Kra, R-Shitei, Matenrou Opera, among others ... To be better, only if we had been there in person! (laughs). It was a very important step for our career. Without a doubt.

22. Do you have any aspirations to be on any other VK oriented media? like NicoNico for example.
For sure! We really want to show our work everywhere possible! Is being a great pleasure to participate in an interview with VKH, one of the largest websites in the world on the style.

23. What are your plans for the next 5 years?
Kazuki: Win the lottery (Laughs). We plan to continue our journey, releasing other albums. Always working to gain greater recognition and the opportunity to play outside of Brazil. In addition, of course to improve our quality is a plan for every minute thereafter.

24. If you had the opportunity to go to Japan what would you want to do there?
Kazuki: Hold concerts, make new fans, have contact with other musicians in the same genre and learn from them. Maybe do shows with them and then have some Heinekens together (laughs). Record an album in Japan personally. I also want to visit Harajuku and the Capcom’s Store.

Ale Verukan: I'd definitely want to go visit Japan's imperial palace and the Nagoya castle!

Smash: One of the places that I can't miss is Nagoya castle, Ebisu Circuit and Harajuku Square in Tokyo.

Tai: I would like to visit the Imperial Palace and the Temple Kinkakuji.

25. Finally, what would you like to say to any new fans?
Ale Verukan: To any new fans, I'd like to thank you all a lot for supporting the band and I'd love to see every one of them in our concerts!

Smash:  Please keep supporting us and thank you! You guys are awesome! (*ω)
