Interview with KAYA at Anime Expo

In the morning of Anime Expo’s first day, VKH had the incredible opportunity to interview Kaya. Sakura and I were so excited as we made our way to the intended meeting area! Upon our arrival, we found Kaya looking lovely as ever in his entirely black costume for "TABOO" and seated elegantly on a red couch….

Hello! VKH is very honored to be able to interview you for the first time today. Will you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Kaya: -In English- Hello, I’m Kaya!

How was your trip to Anime Expo? Did your flight go well?

Kaya: It was very fun.

That’s good to hear! This is your first performance in the US since 2009 and your second appearance at a Californian anime convention. How are you feeling this time around?

Kaya: It’s been five years since I was last here in LA and I am really looking forward to the concert and to seeing everyone.

We have been anticipating your return as well, so everyone is looking forward to seeing Kaya. To move on, how do you come up with the concept for each of your releases?

Kaya: I want to get out everything in my heart. I am also always thinking about the next thing to do and then try to release stuff on schedule.

It takes a lot of creativity to be a good artist. What does being creative mean to you?

Kaya: Hm, that’s a difficult question! –everyone laughs- It’s good to have an image.

Vivienne: An image?

Kaya: Yes, an image and a concept. Just creating something is kind of meaningless, so I want to create out of love for both my work and my fans.

Vivienne: Ah, I see. You want to create in a way so that it is not just for consumption.

Kaya: Yes!

How would you describe your musical evolution since your debut?

Kaya: In the past, I’ve always sang what I wanted to sing and recently I have gone back to my original concept from Schwarz Stein.

Vivienne: Oh, Schwarz Stein? That’s very cool!

Kaya: Oh! You know?

Vivienne: Yes! I have listened to your past works.

Kaya: -laughs- Well, Schwarz Stein is more gothic and so I have recently come back to that.

Will you tell us a bit about your upcoming single, "TABOO"? VKH has recently seen the preview for it and we’re all very excited!

Kaya: "TABOO" is decadence and gothic. I want to create my own version or interpretation of those things. I also have a lot of confidence in it!

Bands usually have multiple members who split up the work, but Kaya is a solo artist. Is it difficult for you?

Kaya: Ah, no! It’s not difficult at all.

Vivienne: It’s not difficult because Kaya is great, isn’t it? –everyone laughs-

So are you excited about tomorrow’s concert? How do you feel about performing in the US again after so long?

Kaya: It’s been five years and so I really want everyone to enjoy tomorrow’s concert. I’ll put my whole heart into singing!

Alright, since it’s nearing the end of our interview time, we have a little fun question. We remember this old interview you did with Shattered Tranquility in which you said you have over 100 darlings! Has that number gone up since then?

Kaya: Oh! Darlings! –laughs and throws his hands in the air a bit- I have so much more now!

Thank you so much for sitting with us through this interview! We hope that your experience here will be just as great, if not greater than last time. To wrap up, can you leave a message to your fans and the readers?

Kaya: I’m so happy to be back here after five years. I’m going to sing with all my heart, so please enjoy the concert. Next time, it won’t be five years until I return. I’ll come back sooner!

And with that, Kaya graciously posed for the picture above before we said our goodbyes. It's not the best quality but we were all in a rush due to the time...

VKH would like to give a huge thanks to Kaya’s management and staff for making the interview possible, as well as for being so patient with us! We hope you have enjoyed the interview, although it is shorter than intended. Look out for the live report of the concert next!
