Amai Furiku?
-The sweet freak's guide to VK fashion
Model spotlight issue.
Model spotlight issue.
This month, I wanted to do something a little different, so thought I'd start monthly showcases of my favourite Japanese models!
This month, I'd like to look at Akira, and her amazing boyish style.
(as always click photos for links to the items shown or for bigger images)
Akira, as I'm sure many of you know, is one of the more tomboyish models to grace the pages of Kera, sporting items from brands such as Sex Pot Revenge, Algonquins, Super Lovers, and Hyper Core. You may also know her as the lead singer of Disacode.
Her strong personal style always shows through in her photos, and her near iconic hair and makeup style fits right in with the j rock and visual kei aesthetic, despite her strong punk influences.
According to her blog, something she is proud of is that her hair is often mistaken for being extensions! I have seen a fair few girls in recent years wearing similar styles, but as highlighted in Amai Furiku? 7, western hairdressers may find it hard to understand what exactly you want doing to your hair! I think that Akira is a great example for this hairstyle, with her signature black and blonde layered look, it would make it easier for a hairdresser to see what you want. However, if you have short hair, you can always head down the route of using extensions! You can get super cheap, but good quality synthetic extensions (try ebay, buyhair, or iwantcute) and layer them up as much or as little as you like in order to get that perfect layered look!
Akira seems to favour wearing sarueru, or drop crotch pants, along with fun vests and hoodies.
Here are a few of my top picks that fit her style best.
These sorts of items are comfy and cute, but also add to the boyish look. The items are also good in both winter and summer- they're loose fitting so good for summer, and can be layered easily, making them warm and cosy for winter. The branded items she can be seen wearing, may be a little steep in price, so try customising, or searching ebay, as well as cheaper highstreet stores for alternatives! My go to stores would be Primark, H&M, and Forever 21.
Shoes wise, she seems to stick with either chunky boots, or comfy hi top trainers. Again, these add to her boyish look, but she seems to be able to add a slight touch of femininity when choosing colours, such as pink boots with black trousers, or teaming darker shoes with trousers that have cute and bright patterns on them. Try looking at brands such as TUK, Dr Martens, and Adidas for similar shoes.
Lastly, her makeup. She tends to lean toward smokey, and cat eye type looks, keeping her skin tone and lip colour very neutral, making her eyes really stand out. On her blog, she says that she would liken herself to a wolf or other similar animals, and you can really see that in her eyes. Akira seems as though she favours light blue and grey contact lenses, which are very reminiscent of wolves, and make her eyes look incredibly piercing.
Her makeup is very simple, but is effective in making you stand out. To recreate her makeup, all you will need is some good black eyeshadow, black kohl, mascara, and black liquid liner.
Cover the entire lid in black eyeshadow, blend outward in a cat like shape. Do the same along the bottom lashes until you have a smudgey cat eye. Line your waterline as well as your lashlines, and smudge away! Using your liquid liner, pull a thin streak across your upper eyelid and flick it outward in the same shape as the rest of the cateye. Line a little underneath too. Last but not least, add a little mascara to darken your lashes and open up your eyes.
As an optional extra, use a little concealer on your lips, blend, and coat in a light, clear lipgloss for a more girly apparoach.
If you have access to issues of Kera, there are often some very good tutorials in there!
I think that covers just about everything! Try using elements of Akira's style in your own, whether you try out the hair, makeup, or clothing style, mix it up and see what you can come up with!
If you have a favourite model, reader model, or other style inspiration that you'd like me to cover, feel free to leave me a comment and let me know! Maybe I'll be able to do a tutorial on their hair or makeup for all of you~
