REVIEW: D – Vampire Saga

d_ohp_vampire_saga
From atop his throne, the now-vampire Asagi tells of his long tale through the art that D does best: music! He is joined in this crusade by his companions Ruiza on guitar, HIDE-ZOU on guitar, Tsunehito on bass and HIROKI on drums. And together, what a story they tell…

An album with an impressively long track list, Vampire Saga offers veterans and new D fans alike a look into their world and what they are about. Released last month, the album opens up a window into the story behind Asagi and was promoted visually by two PVs: In the name of justice and Der König der Dunkelheit.
Musically, many of the tracks can merge into each other, but they are diverse enough to tell a progressive story and offer Asagi’s wonderful vocal skills as well as some varied instrumental work showing the band member’s talents and artistic prowess.
Thematically, the album generally seems to be about a journey towards immortality, with notions of love, betrayal, darkness and violence within it. The fall of Asagi’s kingdom as he begins his transformation into a creature of darkness, such as those previous to him in his bloodline seems to be the theme of the latest PV, Der König der Dunkelheit.
The band seem to have become influenced by European, specifically German, themes and it crops up within the music from time to time. Furthermore, the track “Desert Warrior” has some middle-Eastern tones to the instrumental work and sounds very traditional.
D have come a long way since their beginning in 2003 and become a very-popular Visual Kei band. Since going major in 2008 they have been releasing some high-quality singles and PVs to accompany them for our enjoyment. The band certainly look to have a good future ahead of them, still, so we can look forward to more releases by D in the remainder of the year.
