This considerably long album offers much of the Nagoya-based band’s melancholic themes and heavy metal riffs and tracks. Powerful drumming and death growls mixed with Ai’s mournful singing provide an interesting mix which will please both new and veteran Deathgaze fans alike.
The album includes some tracks from recent singles, namely “BLOOD” and “SORROW”, which is logical enough and adds some length to the album. Furthermore, if you purchased the deluxe edition you got to enjoy re-mastered versions of many of their earlier songs.
Musically this album offers both the old, well-known Deathgaze style as well as some more experimental pieces which shows the band are not afraid of trying new things out and may be heading in a new direction in future releases. Notable tracks are “CHILDREN” which has interesting electronic-type vocals and “GRACE” which is a deeply melancholic and sad song.
I noticed quite a lot of different styles of metal coming into this album including power metal, metalcore and heavy metal and it included a lot of catchy riffs. The band progress between these heavier musical styles and slower pieces seamlessly and perform both to a high quality.
Lyrics-wise this album is similar to their previous works in that the emotions conveyed are mostly melancholy, anger, sadness and generally the worse human emotions. Ai’s voice is perfect for putting forth these themes with his long-held notes and the rest of the band come together to fill in the gaps that words could not express.
From this release and as a band, I see Deathgaze as having a long future ahead of them. They have had their up’s and their down’s such as vocalist changes but their current setup seems solid enough to last.
