摩天楼オペラ (Matenrou Opera, Skyscraper Opera) recently went major with the label King Records and to celebrate this milestone in their history, they released their debut major-label album titled “Abyss”.

Track list
1. INDEPENDANT
2. もう一人の花嫁(mou hitori no hanayome, Another bride)
3. frill
4. coal tar
5. Double Clutch
6. フタリ(futari, Two people)
7. Finale…
The album contains their signature infusion of digital synths, heavy riffs and a mixture of modern and classical elements without falling into the trap of all the songs sounding the same. Progressively the album becomes more melancholy as it reaches it’s conclusion, but there are plenty of heavy sections throughout and catchy verses.
This is an important release for the band as they step up to a bigger crowd as they not only need to release material to justify becoming major, but they must also please their fans when they were an indie band.
Sono’s voice has matured further to offer operatic vibrato and the lyrical content and themes certainly followed and touch on deeper emotions and situations. The musical ability of the band member’s showcases the ability to adeptly write and perform both slow and fast pieces and convey a plethora of emotions with a very wide range.
The album does not offer many tracks but they are all new and diverse. The ending track, “Finale…”, is an instrumental piece and nicely concludes the release and brings it all together.
Perhaps with the extra funding from joining a major label, the band will be able to offer more widespread and regular tours of Europe, America and the rest of the world.
